Arthur sends banner boys to munster final
Eight points, all from frees, by full-forward Niall Arthur earned Clare a place in the Munster minor hurling final thanks to victory over Limerick in a thriller at the Gaelic Grounds last night.
Clare got off to a flying start with points by Jamie Shanahan, Daire Keane and two frees by Arthur all inside five minutes. John Fitzgibbon had Limerick's opening score after six minutes when he pointed a free and he added another from play.
But a strike by David O'Halloran brought a Clare goal after 10 minutes when he raced through the Limerick defence and his angled shot beat Owen Webb O'Rourke.
The visitors made it 1-7 to 0-2 after 17 minutes and the game looked like becoming a one-sided affair.
Limerick fared better in the second quarter and points by midfielder Sean Kelly, Shane Dowling -- with a spectacular shot -- a Fitzgibbon free, and a Declan Hannan '65' and another from play left a goal separating them.
Arthur put over another free for Clare after 27 minutes, but just on half-time Hannon sent over his second '65' to have Clare leading 1-8 to 0-8 at the break.
Limerick levelled within three minutes of the restart when Michael Ryan kicked to the Clare net, but the concession of too many frees proved costly for the Treatymen, who nonetheless had outstanding performers in Hannan and Dowling.
