Watching Brief - The Fugue can lead raiders at Santa Anita
ON what could be a long night for the European raiders at Santa Anita, Declaration Of War isn't expected to be good enough to deliver Aidan O'Brien an elusive triumph in the Classic.
If there is to be a winner from these parts, John Gosden's The Fugue might be it in the Turf. Desperately unlucky not to win the mares' race at the Los Angeles track off a mixed preparation last term, the Dansili four-year-old has been a revelation of late.
She ran away with the Yorkshire Oaks before then destroying Al Kazeem and Trading Leather in the Irish Champion Stakes with far more ease than Declaration Of War had done at York previously.
In the context of this race, that is a solid recommendation and the fact that she will get to race on her favoured fast ground is a major plus for William Buick's mount. Granted, last year's one-two Little Mike and Point Of Entry pose a formidable challenge, but Gosden's decision to eschew the mares' race in favour of this could prove inspired.
