Watching Brief . . .

Deauville fulfilled some of his promise with a battling Belmont Derby triumph under Jamie Spencer on Saturday.

Sure, the New York event is what you might categorise as second-class Grade One, but it was still an encouraging turn.

On his previous try at 10 furlongs in the Dante at York, Deauville also ran really well, just getting collared by Wings Of Desire on what was his seasonal bow.

In the Derby at Epsom, he travelled smoothly into the straight, but didn't get home over the trip on soft ground.

In light of events at York and New York, Deauville seems suited by 10 furlongs on fast ground and aggressive tactics.

With that in mind, odds of 16/1 about him for the Juddmonte International back on the Knavesmire look too big.

Aidan O'Brien has The Gurkha, US Army Ranger, Found, Minding and Alice Springs ahead of Deauville in the betting. However, they could all have other targets, and the race looks made for him, with the likes of Time Test and Hawkbill opposable.
