Fields Of Athenry really impressed at Leopardstown on Thursday.
On rain-softened ground over a mile and six furlongs, Seamie Heffernan dictated the fractions with aplomb on Aidan O'Brien's Galileo colt, eventually pulverising Listed rivals by 10 lengths. Conditions might have exaggerated the margin, but it was a fine effort.
Fields Of Athenry's narrow Ulster Derby defeat under a big weight was commendable, and this confirmed his progression. He isn't in the St Leger and may not be that good, but he is in the Great Voltigeur at York on August 19. O'Brien might well opt to test the water there.
Fields Of Athenry gave Drifting Mist 8lb and 12.5-length beating. Previously at the Curragh, Drifting Mist was 6.5 lengths behind Bondi Beach and Order Of St George when in receipt of 12lb. Those two are 7/1 and 8/1 for the York race, while Fields Of Athenry is as big as 20/1. He is value at that.
