Those expecting Long Run to peak at Cheltenham might have taken solace from his win at Newbury yesterday, but it was another sluggish performance not befitting a Gold Cup favourite.
He was arguably fortuitous to scrape home from Burton Port, a horse that hadn't run since November 2010, when beaten by Diamond Harry in the Hennessy off a mark of 157 with just 10st 1lb on his back.
Granted, Long Run was conceding 10lbs, but just imagine what Kauto Star would have done to that field. The more you see of Long Run this term, the more you expect the 4/1 that can still be had about Kauto Star to be a distant memory come Gold Cup day.
