WATCHING BRIEF

FIRST LIEUTENANT lost less in defeat than he might have at Leopardstown on Wednesday.

After a bad experience at Fairyhouse, he jumped well before keeping on for second behind Last Instalment. He has taken his time to hit peak form over fences, but his defeat of Rock On Ruby, So Young and Oscars Well at Cheltenham last March shows what he is capable of at his best.

With the RSA Chase favourite Grands Crus not guaranteed to run in the race and Philip Fenton mentioning that Last Instalment might go for the Powers Gold Cup instead, 20/1 is big about First Lieutenant for the Prestbury Park contest.

Lest we forget, Mouse Morris is renowned for readying one for March, and First Lieutenant loves that hill at Cheltenham.
