Upping the ante

The performance of Dubai Thunder in winning on his debut at Newbury on Friday was something to behold.

Ridden by Adam Kirby, the Dubawi colt was always handy in race that seemed to be run at a pretty generous gallop, and he came off the bridle around two furlongs out, which was seemingly worrying for his backers as he had run a bit freely early in the contest.

The response was sensational, as he stretched away by ten lengths. Intriguingly, Ulysses won the same race last year and was sent off just 8/1 in the Epsom Derby, even if he had already run twice before he snared that maiden.

The worry for anyone backing Dubai Thunder for the Derby is that he will not take his chance so soon after his triumph at Newbury, but the temptation will surely be too great for connections. He has the makings of a splendid middle-distance performer and victory at Epsom is realistic. BET: Dubai Thunder in Derby, 1pt win 20/1
