Upping the ante

The Albert Bartlett was a somewhat messy race on Friday at Cheltenham.

Monalee, which was perhaps the most impressive horse in the minds of the paddock observers, betrayed his inexperience; he ran freely, and that gave him little chance of winning a race of this nature.

Death Duty, the hot favourite, was rather disappointing. He was chopped up at the second-last by Monalee, and was ultimately well-held when he came down at the last.

Penhill, more of a dual-purpose type animal than either of those, relished the nice ground and had the stamina to beat Monalee, but, considering the manner of how the Henry de Bromhead-trained runner-up raced, it was impressive how he was still bang there halfway up the hill.

De Bromhead has already described the Milan-bred as "a real chaser in the making", which is backed up by his physique. Given that the Irish dominated the race, and that Cheltenham is nearly sure to be his aim next season, the RSA Chase could be his for the taking. Even so, he is available at 16/1.
