Trifolium excels on chase debut

FORMER smart novice hurdler Trifolium returned from a lengthy absence to make an impressive chasing debut at Thurles.

Jockey Bryan Cooper bounced him out into an early lead in the opening beginners chase and he simply devoured his fences, the 2/1 favourite coming home unchallenged to win by 10 lengths from Cairdin.

"From the first day we schooled him, he jumped fantastic," enthused trainer Charles Byrnes.

Cooper went on to secure a 14/1 double when partnering Giantofaman to victory for Dessie Hughes in the maiden hurdle.

Odds-on favourite Urano looked sure to score for Ruby Walsh coming to the final flight, but the Willie Mullins-trained gelding was outbattled by his main market rival.

Mark Walsh has been in fine form for JP McManus and the jockey struck aboard Edward O'Grady's progressive Gallant Tipp (9/2) in the novice hurdle.

Racing ended with a winning favourite as the Pat Fahy-trained Western Boy (11/8) secured a two-and-a- half-length win from Mm Dazzler under Katie Walsh.
