Sir Des Champs delivers for Mullins

Last season's Cheltenham Festival winner Sir Des Champs took full advantage of Knockfierna's unfortunate late exit to record a seven-length triumph in the Grade Two Greenmount Park Novice Chase at Limerick yesterday.
Sent off at odds of 4/7, the Willie Mullins-trained gelding had been making hard work of overhauling Charles Byrnes' smart mare, but his task was simplified when that one crashed through the wing of the second-last fence. While there was nothing in it at the time, Emmet Mullins felt he would have won anyway. "I thought I had Knockfierna covered," he said afterwards.
Four Commanders, likewise sporting the winner's Gigginstown House Stud colours, took second, and the maroon and white silks were also carried to victory when Byrnes' Trifolium justified 8/11 favouritism for Niall Madden in the preceding conditions hurdle. Madden went on to double up on the JP McManus-owned Fahamore.
