Rebel Fitz faces Tipperary test from Thousand Stars

Tom Peacock

REBEL Fitz's Champion Hurdle credentials could be given a serious examination at Tipperary this weekend after proven top-notcher Thousand Stars featured among his potential rivals.

A determined victory in the Galway Hurdle features among four consecutive victories for the Mick Winters-trained seven-year-old and he barely came off the bridle on his latest appearance at Cork.

The dream for connections is that he can prove good enough for a crack at the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham next March and they are likely to learn plenty in Sunday's Friends Of Tipperary Hurdle if Thousand Stars does line up.

Willie Mullins' admirable grey is a three-time Grade One winner, has finished fourth in a Champion Hurdle and been placed in countless other major events.

Winters said: "He's in great order and we're looking forward to the race.

"Thousand Stars is in there so it will be a step up for us if he runs, but our horse is in great form and has freshened up nicely.

"He's not had a lot of hard races, this is a tough race, but we're expecting a big performance."

A total of 11 entries have been received for Sunday's Grade Two, with Blackstairmountain, Captain Cee Bee and Fosters Cross other notable contenders.
