Obligada steals show in Prendergast treble

Lady O'Reilly's Obligada could have her sights raised after proving the star of a Kevin Prendergast treble at Limerick last night.

The well-bred Obligada clashed with the likes of possible Classic contenders Seville and Dubai Prince last term but she appeared to appreciate the easier company in the Students Of Limerick Race.

Sent off a 6/1 chance, 7lb claimer Sam James produced the filly with a perfectly timed run to prevail by two lengths over Shelley Beach.

Prendergast was on the mark again as the Declan McDonogh-ridden Asheerah (4/1) held John Oxx's odds-on favourite Dance Secretary by a short head in the fillies three-year-old maiden.

And the Curragh trainer combined again with McDonogh to complete his hat-trick when Captainofthefleet gained an overdue win in the concluding maiden.

The well-supported 2/5 favourite travelled sweetly into contention turning for home but was all out in the final furlong. However, McDonogh found enough in the closing stages to record a head success from Hired Hand.

Oxx avenged his earlier defeat with Dance Secretary when 6/4 favourite Swampfire proved a head too good for Prendergast's Estithmaar in the colts maiden under Johnny Murtagh.

Dermot Weld's Reach The Stars benefited from a determined Pat Smullen ride to hold off Concrete And Clay to land the It's A Student's Life Handicap by a short head.

David Marnane's veteran Maal made a winning return to action with a battling success in the mile handicap under Colm O'Donoghue.

Maal hit the front over a furlong from home and stuck his head out gamely to beat off the attentions of Cave Artist and Northern Rocked.
