Nicanor on Arkle trail

Nicanor -- the first horse to beat Denman under Rules -- could return to the scene of his finest hour for a crack at the Irish Independent Arkle Trophy at Cheltenham in March.

Trainer Noel Meade was thrilled with the performance of his nine-year-old, which was only narrowly beaten in a hot novice chase at Fairyhouse last Sunday.

The gelding spent plenty of time on the sidelines after winning two Grade One novice hurdles almost four years ago, but Meade feels his charge is now coming back to his best.

"He seems to be getting there now," Meade said. "He'll have an entry in the Arkle Trophy anyway and we'll just have to see. He may be more of a Powers Gold Cup horse but we're very happy with where he is at the moment."
