Mars one of 28 Aidan O’Brien corkers for Champagne Stakes

MARS, ante-post favourite for the Investec Derby, heads a mammoth 28-strong entry from Aidan O'Brien in the One Call Insurance Champagne Stakes at Doncaster.

The Galileo colt was a short price for Epsom even before his winning debut at Dundalk earlier this month and trades at as short as 10-1 with a number of firms for Classic glory.

Stablemate The Ferryman, second to Mars and a winner since, is also part of the O'Brien squad for the September 15 event, as are Royal Ascot third Cristoforo Colombo and promising maiden victors Nevis and The United States.

David Wachman could saddle Group Two winner Probably, while the home challenge may include John Gosden's striking Newmarket scorer Ghurair and Azrur, who triumphed over the course and distance for Michael Bell on June 30.

Richard Hannon won last year's renewal with Trumpet Major and has six entries including Olympic Glory and the highly-regarded Toronado, who bolstered his reputation with a taking display at Ascot over the weekend.

David Simcock has entered Birdman, second to Olympic Glory at the July meeting and an intended starter in next week's Vintage Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

In total, 105 entries were received for the Group Two event, which is the main supporting contest on Ladbrokes St Leger day.
