Kilimanjaro wore down the long-time leader Magic Dancer to strike for the Aidan O'Brien team in the betfred.com Derby Trial Stakes at Lingfield.
Ryan Moore had to work hard on the quirky son of High Chaparral to get on top in the closing stages and Kilimanjaro (5/1) asserted in the final strides to take this Listed race by a length and a quarter.
Christophermarlowe, the 2/5 favourite and wearing the same colours as the winner, flattered to deceive as his challenge petered out and he was only third.
"He's got a very nice attitude and I suppose he's in the Derby picture now," said Paul Smith for the winning owners.
Also at Lingfield, Majestic Queen gave Curragh trainer Tracey Collins a notable British success in the Chartwell Fillies' Stakes.
William Buick produced the 16/1 shot to overtake long-time leader Fresles and scamper clear. New Providence, the 5/2 favourite, tried to claw her back but the five-year-old mare had enough in hand to lift this Group Three prize by two lengths.
Another Irish raider Newsletter struck for the younger generation in the Listed EBF Stallions Weatherbys General Stud Book Kilvington Fillies' Stakes at Nottingham.
Favourite Spinatrix and Queen Catrine were at the head of affairs but Ken Condon's filly (7/1) ran on strongly to score by a length and a quarter from fellow three-year-old Pastoral Girl.
