Galway Races: Day 5

Published 01/08/2014 | 14:55

THE chaotic, champagne-filled craziness that is Ladies Day may be over, but there is still plenty of action at Ballybrit for day five of the Galway racing festival.

Today’s evening meeting will see up to 20,000 people pack the stands.

Cars with tired bodies, sore heads and beer-stained frocks on hangers slowly meandered out of the city this morning following a successful Ladies Day.

But with the August bank holiday weekend kicking off, many punters  - particularly locals - are making a return to the suburban race track this afternoon for another round of excitement.

The feature race on the Friday of the long-running equestrian extravaganza is the €100,000 Guinness Handicap.

Fashionistas will have another opportunity to bag themselves some prize money away from the tote, by entering Friday’s Fair Lady competition.

The winner will receive a package courtesy of the Athlone Town Centre Shopping Centre and Sheraton Athlone Hotel.

The contest is being judged by stylist Marietta Doran.

While the weather was pleasant yesterday, today’s event saw the rain creep in early on.
