Frankie on a Mezyaad mission

Julian Muscat

A close look at riding arrangements is often informative and it's interesting to note that Frankie Dettori forsakes Newbury today for two rides at Leicester.

The first of them, Spirit Of Sharjah, is a spare but the second, Mezyaad in the Maiden Stakes (4.25), is very much of interest. Mezyaad is owned by a member of the Maktoum family, for whom Dettori is retained to ride.

Despite an absence of runners from Saeed Bin Suroor's stable, the Italian could have secured a near-full book of rides at Newbury -- where the real action is.

The inference is that Mezyaad has ability, and that Dettori is "test-driving" the colt ahead of a possible transfer into the Godolphin string of Sheikh Mohammed. He is worth supporting on those grounds alone.
