Weak card must move to Saturday
WITH today's card comprising the pair of features, supplemented by four uninspiring handicaps, the soft underbelly of Cheltenham's move to a four-day festival is exposed.
The action isn't of sufficient quality to justify what is described as the equine Olympics.
However, redemption may soon be at hand with the mooted moving of the festival to close on Saturday, rather than Friday. Cheltenham's hierarchy is convinced that Saturday will become hugely popular with a public keen to savour a day out, as much as watch racing of championship standard.
That would resolve a major problem. All the weaker races could be switched to Saturday, leaving the previous three days to host what used to be the old three-day festival. The change cannot come soon enough.
