Wayne Bailey's race-by-race guide

1.30

Expect the usual frantic pace with the adrenalin flowing. One horse which can handle a bit of speed is Ballyandy, last year’s Champion Bumper winner which got off the mark over timber when winning the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury last month.

2.10

It’s impossible to oppose Altior in the Arkle, although priced around 2/7, it’s a race best watched without a bet. He has the gears, he has the pace and it’s inevitable that Nicky Henderson’s star is being compared to Sprinter Sacre. Now rated 170, he was outstanding in the Game Spirit Chase at Newbury.

2.50

A wide-open handicap in which a good case could be made for at least ten of the 24 runners. Gordon Elliott’s Noble Endeavor catches the eye under jockey Davy Russell but I’m giving a tentative each-way vote to outsider Buywise, around 33/1. His last two races were disappointing but he’s got a good record overall at Cheltenham.

3.30

Yanworth will be a warm order with punters, while Brain Power left them for dead in competitive handicap at Ascot last time. However I’m keen on Irish raider Petit Mouchoir. I hope to see Bryan Cooper get him out in front early to keep him out of trouble.

4.10

Mullins has a very strong hand with Limini and Vroum Vroum Mag, and the former gets the nod. Gordon Elliott’s Apple’s Jade also has claims but the selection beat her at Punchestown and there’s no reason to believe the form will be reversed.

4.50

A Genie In Abottle should give a good account of himself, but at 5/1 in the early markets, Edwulf (NAP) is the value bet today. Joseph O’Brien’s eight-year-old was a faller in a Grade Two at Navan but bounced back to form to win at Naas recently.

5.30

Foxtail Hill has winning course form but the handicapper may have caught up. Nicky Henderson’s Gold Present is a temperamental sort and is somewhat unpredictable, but a rating of 137 today seems very fair and I’m happy to back him at 10/1 or thereabouts.
