Checker set to impress

Anita Chambers

Checkerboard showed a glimpse of promise on his return from a lengthy lay-off last time and he is worth a shout in the Yorkshire Post Ladies Day-19th May Handicap Chase at Wetherby.

The eight-year-old has not seen much racing for a horse of his age -- this will be just his 12th start -- but he has demonstrated flashes of ability. A winner over hurdles and in bumper company, he took a while to get it right over fences before finally coming good at the fifth attempt at Carlisle back in October 2009.

He was then off the track until the following March when he proved bitterly disappointing before spending nearly a full year on the sidelines.

Something was obviously amiss for him to be out of action for so long but Howard Johnson must have been satisfied with his sixth place on his return at Sandown last month. There was much to like about that effort and he retains some sparkle.

Red Merlin can make it a hat-trick in the first division of the Royal Pigeon Racing Association Novices' Hurdle and Courella is the choice in Stratford's toteswinger Flexi Betting Handicap Chase. Leopard Hills can take a step back up the ladder in the Bet totepool On All UK Racing Novices' Handicap Hurdle.
