Cape Blanco has eaten into Canford Cliffs' lead in the race to become Cartier Horse of the Year following his impressive victory in the Irish Champion Stakes.

There is only one blip on his record this season, the French Derby. Victories in the Dante, Irish Derby and Irish Champion along with his second to Harbinger in the King George mean Cape Blanco has reduced the lead to a mere four points in both the Horse of the Year and Three-year-old Colt categories.

Canford Cliffs has the chance to strike back at Ascot on Saturday-week.

Midday has swept into contention in the Older Horse category after her fine win in the Vermeille. She is right on the heels of Goldikova and Starspangledbanner and heads for the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf, which she won last year. There are still plenty of points on offer so there is all to play for.
