Canford set for Newbury
Canford Cliffs is set to make his eagerly awaited seasonal debut in the Greenham Stakes at Newbury on Saturday.
Trainer Richard Hannon confirmed the colt will go for the Group Three contest over seven furlongs after being pleased with his workout on Sunday.
The runaway Coventry Stakes winner is second-favourite at 5/1 for the English 2,000 Guineas despite losing his 100pc record when third in the Prix Morny at Deauville in August.
"He has been off since Deauville last August, so will obviously improve for the run, but after such an absence it would not be ideal going for the Guineas without a dress rehearsal, and Newbury, being just down the road, fits perfectly," explained Hannon.
Hannon also plans to run Dick Turpin in the Greenham after the Tattersalls Ireland Sales Stakes victor had a spin on Sunday.
The Hannon pair were among 10 entries for the Greenham along with Brian Meehan's Prix Morny winner Arcano, which was bought by Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum before his French success.
Sheikh Hamdan has a second string to his Greenham bow in the Barry Hills-trained Khattaab.
Arry's Orse, Bullwhip, Free Judgement, Markazzi, Rodrigo De Torres and Russian Rock complete the possibles.
