There is no respite in the quality of the racing at Shelbourne and a week after the Night of Stars spectacular the leading classic trial for 2017 will commence tonight with the eight heats of the Comerford Cakes Open 525.
It promises to be a marvellous competition with a really strong entry and two of the star performers last weekend, Droopys Wilbury and Whoops Jack go head to head in Heat 6.
Whoops Jack was most impressive when clocking 28.09 for the 525 yards but Droopys Wilbury was really powerful as he saw off the likes of Ballymac Matt and Sonic and that should be good enough here.
The Pat Norris-trained Bull Run Bolt (9.12) was favourite to beat Droopys Wilbury in the Juvenile Derby but didn't have the run of the race and was well beaten into third. He is capable of a very big run and can dispose of Brinkleys Blaze and Burgess Dubh in Heat 5.
Good News has been one of the most talked about youngsters this year and he will be bidding to get back on the winning trail in the opening heat. He took a heavy fall last time at Limerick but has shaped well in a trial since and should be too good for this opposition.
Peter Cronin and Owen McKenna can also pay to follow. Swithins Bay looks a likely winner of Heat 8 for Cronin while Ballymac Tomasso and Hot Trend can be on the mark for McKenna.
