Clares Rocket remains the clear 2/1 favourite for the BoyleSports Irish Derby but kennel companion Sonic is now a much closer 4/1 second favourite following a terrific third-round session of the classic at Shelbourne on Saturday.

The 'Rocket' survived an early charging of traps in Heat 6 when leading all the way to win by seven lengths in 29.58 on a track that was running slower than in recent weeks. It was another commanding performance from the brilliant racer.

An even more impressive was Sonic, which gave an exhibition of tracking to win Heat 7 in 29.69. He was only a five-length third entering the back straight and then passed the two leaders with a classic bit of tracking around the final bends to win by three lengths from Buckos Dream.

Tyrur Harold sealed his place as third favourite at 8/1 with his all-the-way success in Heat 2 when clocking 29.60.

Another to give a really polished performance was Tom Buggy's Kilgraney Ace as he flew clear to the bend in the concluding Heat 8 and he won by six lengths from Drive On Tipp in 29.70.

A shock here saw Typical Ash getting up late to take third place ahead of the strongly fancied Clonbrien Hero.

The other heat winners were Sidarian Fern in 29.98, Native Chimes in 29.81, Jaytee Jet in 29.79 and Droopys Cabaye in 29.80.
