McManus' Kirby backing to continue
There has been a warm welcome within the greyhound world for the news that Noreen and JP McManus have agreed to renew their sponsorship of the world's richest puppy contest, the Con and Annie Kirby Memorial at Limerick.
The Kirby Memorial was first run in 2013 and boasts a prize fund of €160,000, while it also provides valuable prize money for the Limerick GAA clubs who participate in the nominator system. Final details of the 2107 event have yet to be revealed.
The stayers take centre stage at Harold's Cross this evening with the first round heats of the Gain Corn Cuchulainn down for decision over the 750 yards distance.
The presence of leading British stayer Fizzypop Buddy in the entry is a great boost for the competition and the dog, which is temporarily based with John Martin, will be a strong fancy for the classic.
Martin warns that he was held up in his work last week for five days and he may need the run. But Fizzypop Buddy (8.55) is nominated to lead them home in the first heat.
Pat Dalton's Tradition (9.40) is Ireland's top stayer and she will be fancied to take Heat 4 at the expense of Tyrap Dragi and Priceless Lassie.
Will Milldean Puma (9.55) stay the 750-yard trip? That's a question that will be on most lips in advance of Heat 5 when he is well housed in one and looks sure to go clear. Jimbobjoe and Two Bens will be running on.
Heat 3 looks a real teaser with Razldazlwestwood (9.25) bidding to hold the likes of Airmount Tess, and Country Legend.
