Reigning Irish Derby champion Ballymac Matt has been confirmed as a definite starter in the €20,000 Marshes International at Dundalk on Tuesday, July 12.
Liam Dowling's charge recently returned to Ireland after his elimination from the English Derby and displayed his well-being with a 28.02 trial at Shelbourne last Saturday. The Dundalk race over 550 yards will be his stepping stone to the Derby defence.
Also confirmed as definite starters at Dundalk are Pat Buckley's English Derby runner-up Droopys Roddick and the UK-based Scottish Derby winner Hot Pipe. English Leger winner Fizzypop Buddy has been invited to be another British representative, while other dogs entered include Lenson Rocky, Droopys Acrobat, Paradise Maverik, Fair Taxes, Cable Bay and Jaytee Dutch.
Highlight of tonight's racing schedule is the Longford Derby which has reached the semi-final stage. Tara trainer Ian Reilly has a big chance of winning the first heat with Deanridge Wazzo (9.12) while Shea Campbell's Stefans Dazzler (9.24) can put his early pace to best effect in the second.
Two very interesting puppy events will commence this evening. The Kasco Stake opening round will be run at Thurles where Michael O'Donovan's Laughil Alex (8.32) looks the one to beat in the competition. Whizzing Scolari and Droopys Oregon can be the other heat winners.
The Red Mills Unraced Bitch Stake starts at Youghal and the winners here can be Rising Pride (8.33) and Mustang Swift (8.48).
