Hennessy chases unique double with Jaytee Patriot

A great year for trainer Paul Hennessy could turn into a magnificent one if Jaytee Patriot can win the English St Leger at Wimbledon next week.
The Gowran handler has already won the Ladbrokes Easter Cup, the William Hill English Derby and the Kerry Agribusiness Irish St Leger at Limerick, and success in the English Leger would see him break all sorts of records.
An Irish and English double would be unique but it is quite possible as Jaytee Jet was easily the fastest heat winner last Thursday and is now disputing favouritism with Charlie Lister's English Derby finalist Cloran Paddy.
Jaytee Patriot is owned by John Turner, who also owns the English Derby winner Jaytee Jet. It is 6/1 bar Jaytee and Cloran Paddy in the betting in advance of Thursday's semi-finals. The final is due to be run next Tuesday.
Jaytee Patriot has a trap six draw in the first semi, with Rubys Rascal and Fizzypop Buddy representing the biggest threats.
On the same Wimbledon card will be the semi-finals of the RFS Puppy Derby, in which Hennessy has Jaytee Samurai in action, while Pat Buckley has three runners in Graces Blueboy, Killinan Rosie and Killinan Lee. All three have prospects of going a fair bit further.
Waterford track's main event of the year, the Gain Select Stakes will reach its climax on Saturday, and it promises to be a huge clash of early pacers.
Quietly, bidding to give Ian Reilly a second winner of the competition on the trot, is one of our top sprinters and must have a huge chance of cutting out the running.
But the likes of the kennel companions Skywalker Manner and Riverside Oscar will make him work had for the lead. Peter Cronin's Ela Alecko is also capable of a big run.
