Fourteen Irish remain on derby trail

Fourteen Irish-trained runners have qualified for the third round of the Star Sports English Derby at Towcester.

PJ Fahy's Tyrur Shay has now been promoted to 6/1 favourite for the classic following his record-breaking run on Friday and he is followed in the betting by fellow raiders Priceless Brandy at 7/1 and Clares Rocket at 9/1.

A number of Irish runners will clash on Saturday next. Swithins Brae, College Paradise, Ballymac Sarahjo and Jaytee Jet will meet in the fourth heat, while there will be a titanic clash between Clares Rocket, Priceless Brandy and Jaytee Yankee in the fifth. Ballymac Matt and Tyrur Shay dominate Heat 6.

Ger Kiely's brilliant staying bitch Airmount Tess claimed another major six-bend prize when a very deserving winner of the Barry's Tea Open 750 at Curraheen Park on Saturday..

She was led to near the fifth bend by Flying Flyer, but then hit the front and won by a length-and-a-half from Redzer Ruby in 41.12, with Droopys Smasher running on late to be a similar distance third.

It was a record-breaking night at Tralee on Friday, with the 550 yard mark being twice rewritten in the semi-finals of the Kerry GAA Race of Champions.

Johnny O'Sullivan's Native Chimes led all the way when winning the first semi in 29.40, as he beat Cahir Castle by four lengths. Then Pat Guilfoyle's Good News gained a length-and-a-half win over Witches Belle in 29.34. The other semi was won by Brandyandbaileys by a length-and-a-half from Killinan Rosie in 29.72.
