Derby shock as Tyrur Shay is absent
The final number of entries for the BoyleSports Irish Derby came to 126 yesterday but a shock absentee was English Derby runner-up Tyrur Shay.
PJ Fahy's flying tracker had finished at the rear of the field after being baulked on the opening bend in the concluding race won by Dream Dude on Saturday. Dream Dude proceeded to lead all the way and had two lengths in hand of Sab Miller at the line in 29.53.
Two Tyrur dogs figure in the list of entries, Tyrur Harold and Tyrur Hugo. However, the absence of Tyrur Shay will have a huge influence on the ante-post betting.
The draw will be made this morning at Shelbourne at 10.30am and it can be viewed live on http://bit.ly/DerbyDraw2017.
There were a number of strong pointers to Derby prospects at Saturday's meeting with last year's Derby final favourite Sonic storming back to his best form as he caught Tyrur Harold in the final strides in a brilliant 29.41 for the 550-yard trip. He was one of four winners for Graham Holland on the night.
Meanwhile, Declan Byrne's Crohane Ronnie won the final of the Thurles Fresh Milk Tipperary Cup at Thurles on Saturday. He took over Boherash Messiah from the opening bend and then held the strong-running Jaytee Barracuda by two lengths in 28.68.
The favourite Cahir Castle was in early trouble and finished a five-length third. Crohane Ronnie doesn't figure among the Derby entries but Jaytee Barracuda and Cahir Castle do.
