Promising apprentice Shane Gray is to take up a new opportunity with Kevin Ryan in England.

A 5lb claimer, Gray, 18, has been based with Tommy Stack and has ridden 28 winners in Ireland and one in England. His first winner came on the Stack-trained Blue Dahlia at the Curragh in March 2011.

Gray, who travels to North Yorkshire after riding at the Curragh, said: "A friend of mine helped me get the job with Kevin Ryan, and hopefully there will be more opportunities for me over there.

"I'd like to thank the Stacks, who have been very good to me since I started out."

Also on the move is Sam James, who is going to ride for David O'Meara next week.

James, 22, had been based with Kevin Prendergast and his biggest winner to date is Minsk in the Irish Cesarewitch.

"I was talking to David on the phone and he asked me to go over to ride out for him and see how I get on," said James.

"It's a big opportunity and I'm really looking forward to it.

"I'd like to thank Mr Prendergast, who has been very good to me, I was with him as a 16-year-old and he taught me an awful lot."
