Whitson keeps flag flying

Chris Smart

Mourne's Reeve Whitson is the last Irishman standing at the Spanish International Amateur Championship after progressing to the quarter-finals over the South Course at La Manga.

The 21-year-old won both his matches at the famous resort, beating Swede Victor Tarnstrom 3&1 in the opening round and then comfortably overcoming Welshman Will Jones 5&4.

Whitson, who qualified 11th, was always in the driving seat and thoroughly deserved his triumph. He will now face Englishman Jamie Rutherford, the third seed.

Richard O'Donovan, who had stormed to the top of the leaderboard over the first two days of stroke play, suffered a shock 3&1 defeat to Santi Vega de Seoane, while Rory McNamara and Dermot McElroy also bowed out.

Hedfort's McNamara fell 7&5 to Neil Raymond, while McElroy (Ballymena) lost 3&2 against Curtis Griffiths.

It made contrasting reading to the previous day, when O'Donovan, Whitson and Chris Selfridge were celebrating their triumph in the Nations Cup event with a gross 293, two shots better than Spain 'A.'
