Rory McIlroy claimed one of the biggest victories of his career last night, outlasting Kevin Chappell and Ryan Moore in the Tour Championship playoff to not only win the tournament, but also come away with the lucrative FedEx Cup.

The win means that McIlroy will meet up with his Ryder Cup team-mates after collecting a mammoth check for $11.5m, which goes to the winner of the season-ending PGA Tour trophy.

The four-time Major champion started the day two shots back from FedEx cup leader Dustin Johnson, but the US Open winner faltered on the final day, allowing McIlroy to pip him to glory.

The Northern Irishman's challenge looked close to being over as he stood on the 16th fairway, three shots behind Chappell, before McIlroy produced the sort of magic that sets him apart from even the world's best players.
