The European Tour has released footage of players thanking the massive crowds that were present over four days to witness Rory McIlroy win his first-ever Irish Open.

McIlroy himself, Martin Keymer, Shane Lowry, and last year's winner Soren Kjeldsen all spoke highly of the thousands who packed out the Kildarer venue over the weekend.

The European Tour took to Twitter to share a video of the players thanking the fans with the ;words: "Dear Irish fans, you're the best. Sincerely, the players."

"The Irish golf fans come out in their numbers, whatever the event. We are making this event as big as it can be so their support is crucial," said McIlroy.

"Ireland (fans)...you could argue that they are the best fans in the world," said Scotland's Richie Ramsay. "Last year the weather wasn't great but they still turn out in their numbers."

Shane Lowry, who memorably won the competition as an amateur in 2009, added: "No matter where we go around the country, be it down in Cork or up in County Down last year or Portrush, wherever we play the Irish Open it is massive," said Shane Lowry.

"They love their golf, they have a sense of humour, they create great atmosphere and I think sometimes it's underestimated for us, how important the atmosphere is for us," said Soren Kjeldsen.

"When you come to Ireland you can sense that people look forward to it, they love it and they love the excitement and appreciate the game

"It's what golf is all about. The passion, the love for the game. What you get from the spectators, the fans - there are a lot of kids out here. It's just a very nice atmosphere."
