WHAT'S that noise emanating from Tralee Golf Club? It's the clanking of All-Ireland football medals, in fact 71 of them won by 19 members of the fine links situated at Barrow outside the Kerry town.

Despite their recent loss to Dublin, the Kingdom's level of success was brought into focus at a function in Tralee GC last Saturday night.

The occasion had two agendas: first, to induct the retired RTE commentator Micheal O Muircheartaigh into honorary membership of the club and also to honour the members who had won All-Ireland senior football medals.

Tralee captain Michael O'Connell presented O Muircheartaigh with a club blazer and a scroll conferring honorary life membership on him.

"We are proud of your achievements and recognise that you are the Kingdom's finest ambassador. Henceforth, you will be an ambassador for Tralee Golf Club too," said the captain. Lady captain Monica O'Neill made a special presentation to Micheal's wife Helena.

As for the All-Ireland honorees, three of them -- Sean Walsh, Dr Dave Geaney and, Denny Long -- were unable to be present, and another, Monsignor Jim Pierse, passed away in advance of the function. Presentations were accepted on their behalf.

The full list of 19 and their All-Ireland medals won is:

8 -- Mike Sheehy, Ger Power, Denis 'Ogie' Moran.

7 -- Sean Walsh, John O'Keeffe; Eoin 'Bomber' Liston.

6 -- Darragh O Se.

4 -- Ger O'Keeffe.

3 -- Kieran Donaghy.

2 -- James 'Micksie' Palmer, Seamus MacGearailt, Tommy Walsh.

1 -- Monsignor Jim Pierse, RIP, Bobby Buckley, Dr Dave Geaney, Denis Long, John L McElligott, David Moran, Barry Walsh.

Their members can boast a treasure trove of football medals, but in golf Tralee has won only one GUI national team event, the 1989 mixed foursomes.

Against that, the Arnold Palmer-designed course is very popular with overseas visitors and home golfers alike, as the club's green fee income this year is set to be around €1m.
