There may be a trophy at Old Trafford next season – Manchester United are planning to invite British Open winner Rory McIlroy to parade the Claret Jug.

The Irishman drew a chorus of boos from the Hoylake fans in Liverpool during his winner’s speech when he admitted the was an avid Manchester United fan.

And the Old Trafford board have are set to invite him to the club to parade the Claret Jug for their opening game of the season against Swansea City on August 16.

Moments after winning the British Open on Sunday, McIlroy joked: “Even being a Manchester United fan I got great support this week and I want to thank everyone for that.”
