Sports fans and celebrities have taken to social media to pay their respects to Christy O'Connor Junior, who sadly passed away in Spain last night aged just 67.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny tweeted: "Very sad to hear of the passing of Ryder Cup hero Christy O'Connor Jnr. Deepest sympathies to his wife Ann, daughter Ann and son Nigel."

Singer Ronan Keating tweeted he was “deeply saddened by the news,” adding that O’Connor was “not just a great golfer but a Gentleman…Rest in Peace my friend. X”.

Former European tour player Craig Ronald remembered O’Connor by tweeting “who could forget his shot into the last at the Belfry. RIP.”.

Irish and Delivery Man actor Simon Delaney said that O’Connor was a “huge loss to Irish sport, a man who gave us great memories”.

Fine Gael senator and Irish Olympian Eamonn Coghlan said that he was “shocked and gutted by this sad news”, adding that O’Connor was “a true gent on and off the golf course”.
