Steady Cutler spearheads green assault on European Amateur

Portstewart star Paul Cutler spearheads the Irish challenge after the first round of the European Amateur Championship in Finland.

Lytham Trophy winner Cutler -- 10th in the World Amateur rankings -- shot level-par of 72 over the Vanajanlinna course.

Walker Cup probable Cutler, a quarter-finalist in the Amateur Championship in June, was steady from tee to green.

He had two bogeys -- at the 10th and 12th -- and two birdies -- at the second and 15th -- and generally looked solid throughout.

Cutler goes into today's second round five strokes behind joint leaders France's Johann Lopez-Lazaro and consistent Swedish player Jesper Kennegard .

Rory Leonard was the next best Irishman yesterday, recording a 75 with four bogeys, a birdie and 13 pars, while Cian Curley dropped no less than five strokes in the last four holes having gone to the turn in one-under-par 35.

Dara Lernihan, the Irish champion, was hugely disappointing, shooting seven-over-par 79, his round spoiled by two double bogeys and six bogeys.
