Shane Lowry makes fantastic joke at his own expense after Phil Mickelson's brush with history
Shane Lowry had a nightmare start to the 2016 Open Championship at Royal Troon, shooting a 78 to leave himself 15 shots off the lead.
Only four golfers out of the 156 taking part shot worse rounds than Lowry today - although unfortunately from an Irish perspective, Paul Dunne finished with a +8 round of 79 after a disastrous nine over par back nine.
Lowry's second nine wasn't much better, with the Offaly golfer shooting six over. After his final round collapse at the US Open last month when a Major seemed within his grasp, today's round will make it tough for him to make the cut at the Open.
If Lowry's spirits were low, he didn't show it on social media. After five-time Major champion Phil Mickelson missed a putt on 18 that would have see him record the first round of 62 in Major history, Lowry posted a brilliant self-deprecating joke.
That was big for me there. I would have never been able to come back from 16 behind. #phil— Shane Lowry (@ShaneLowryGolf) July 14, 2016
Hopefully Lowry can rebound from this morning's horror show to get into contention to make the cut tomorrow.
