Since Bernard Gallacher led the team for the third time in 1995, each captain has been appointed for just one contest. Miguel Angel Jimenez was a vice-captain under McGinley while Thomas Bjorn played against the Americans at Gleneagles.

Both are in line to captain at Hazeltine in two years time, as well as former Ryder Cup heroes Darren Clarke and Padraig Harrington. But which would you like to see skipper the men in blue and gold?

Darren Clarke

Backed by Rory McIlroy, Clarke is the overwhelming favourite despite his rift with McGinley. Five times a player, and twice an assistant, the 2011 Open champion has been part of the boot room.

Miguel Angel Jimenez

He will assume the favourite tag if the continental voice on the Tour believes there should not be two Celts in succession. His English is limited, but he is loved in America and has been an assistant three times.

Thomas Bjorn

As chairman of the Players Committee, Bjorn is a main power broker and, having played for the first time in 12 years, may fancy the job. He has been an assistant three times and is extremely articulate.

Padraig Harrington

Said he would use his first experience as a vice-captain to judge his own suitability and it will be interesting to hear his reaction. Has three majors, but that does not seem as important as it once did.

If the Americans decide to appoint Paul Azinger as the next US skipper - a popular choice with Phil Mickelson - it would give Nick Faldo a chance of revenge should the Europeans also wind back the clock. Or what about Colin Montgomerie - a legend of European golf who captained the team to victory at Celtic Manor in 2010?
