CONGRATULATIONS to Tipperary Golf Club member Pat Ryan, who has won our Druids Glen Golf Resort/Irish Independent 'Golfer of the Month' award for May.
We received a variety of nominations for male and female candidates and there were some very worthy entrants, but when the final choice was made Pat came out tops.
The award seeks to honour club golfers for a notable performance or series of performances during the month in question, and Pat was certainly in sparkling form.
It's great to win one singles event, but to win three in a row is extra-special. In fact, in living memory no member has won three Sunday competitions in a row at Tipperary Golf Club.
Pat, playing off a six handicap, won the club singles on May 16 with 43 points. A week later, now off five, he won the AIB Medals event with 67 nett. Finally, on May 30, he claimed an open singles with 42 points.
Pat's prize is a night for two people sharing in the Druids Glen Hotel, plus a round of golf for two on the Druids Glen course and the Druids Heath course.
Entries are now being taken for the June award. Please use the nomination form (left) to enter.
FATHER and son Michael and James Corry defied all the odds by each scoring a hole-in-one at Shannon Golf Club within 24 hours of each other.
The Corrys, who live in Quin, Co Clare, enjoyed their double celebration.
James, captain of the junior section of Shannon GC, was first off the mark while playing in the men's open singles on Wednesday, June 16.
The 16-year-old, who plays off an 11 handicap, fired a 5-iron tee-shot to the fourth hole, the 160-yard par-3.
His ball landed on the green, then rolled up and hit the pin before dropping into the hole.
Dad Michael, general manager of Shannon Golf Club, was there to see it, as he was one of James' playing partners.
A day later, June 17, Michael (5) was playing in the weekly mixed foursomes when he holed out an 8-iron on the 145-yard par-3 10th hole.
Michael, a senior golfer in the club, had never previously scored an ace.
Don't even think about the odds for that family feat -- a gazillion to one perhaps?
