Rory McIlroy’s claimed a dramatic victory in the PGA Tour Championship and snared a stunning $11.5m windfall as his latest triumph also secured him top spot in the FedEx Cup standings.
After a dramatic play-off with Americans Ryan Moore and Kevin Chappell, McIlroy prevailed on the fourth play-off hole to win his second big title of the month after he bounced back to form with victory in the Deutsche Bank Championship earlier this month.
The jubilant Irishman holed a sensational putt on to claim the most lucrative prize in golf, who started the day well off the lead and hauled his way to the top of the leaderboard with a thrilling round of 64.
This was the moment of glory for McIlroy, with his delight evident as he roared with real passion to toast his victory.
McIlroy had earlier forced his way back into contention with a thrilling eagle as he holed from long-range on the 16th hole.
He also missed a chance to wrap up victory earlier in the play-off, as this putt lipped out when victory was within reach.
Yet McIlroy found a way to push himself over the finishing line at the last, as he warmed up for next weekend’s Ryder Cup with a win that confirms he is the form player in world golf once again.
"It was incredible," said McIlroy. "I just needed to come out here and play a fantastic round of golf and I just wanted to play the way I've been playing. Two wins in the last three tournaments feels pretty nice."
