Rory McIlroy is named Irish Sports Person of the Year, while Trap is top manager
The 22-year-old finished a glittering year by being crowned Irish Sports Personality of the Year at the RTE Sports Awards last night.
The live ceremony on RTE 1 named the number two in the world the country’s top sports person after he ended a great season by winning the Hong Kong Open last month.
The year hadn’t begin so well after his dramatic collapse at the Masters, but his record breaking win in at the US Open in June saw the start of his meteoric rise in the golfing world.
McIlroy who was unable to attend the event accepted his award by video link.
Also honoured on the night were Giovanni Trapattoni and the Leinster rugby team in the show presented by Darragh Maloney, Michael Lyster and Clare MacNamara .
Brian O'Driscoll presented Jack Kyle considered one of the greatest rugby players, with the RTÉ/Irish Sports Council Hall of Fame Award.
The Sports Team of the Year award was presented to the Leinster rugby team.
A new award of Sports Manager of the Year was presented to Republic of Ireland Football manager Giovanni Trapattoni, who got the Republic of Ireland to Euro 2012 qualification.
