The Carrolls sponsorship of the Irish Open is fondly remembered but is now long confined to history.

However, the PJ Carroll Golf Society is still going strong and this year celebrates its 75th year.

Among the competitors at the recent 'birthday' outing was retired member of management Christy Reilly.

Aged 86, Christy first competed for the men's Sweet Afton Cup in 1954.

He has only missed three outings in the 57 years since then, and despite having arthritis in his knees, he managed to complete nine holes.

Marie McCooey, who won the first ladies competition held 50 years ago, also participated, and showed she retains much of her prowess by finishing runner-up to winner Geraldine Rogers.

Brian Ward, twice a previous winner, won the men's event to complete a hat-trick of victories.
