Power closes in on US Q-School final

SEAMUS POWER is one solid round away from US PGA Tour Final Qualifying following a splendid 66 at Florida's Plantation Preserve.

Power (25), from West Waterford, shared 16th on eight-under after 54 holes. The top-19 and ties qualify from this Q-School Second Stage event.

Orlando's Rob Oppenheim led on 17-under, while former Irish Open champ Ross Fisher was one ahead of Power on nine-under after his 70.

Elsewhere, Graeme McDowell pledged to go on the attack after his 71 at the Australian Masters. "Hit it nicely, but didn't get my irons close enough to make more birdies ... I'll get aggressive tomorrow!" he tweeted. McDowell was one-under, six behind leader Matthew Guyatt, entering the second round.

On the other hand, Merrick Bremner (26) attributed his course record 64 at his native South Africa Open to his "conservative approach" on the Serengeti Estate. Gareth Maybin was 80th after a one-over 73.
