IT'S a tribute to the great behaviour of golf spectators that the game's superstars can play literally inches away on the other side of a flimsy fairway rope without fear for their safety ... until Saturday in Atlanta, when Phil Mickelson was accosted after his second shot from the rough on the eighth hole.
The fan, believed to be a teenager, ran behind Mickelson after the shot and started slapping him on the back and yelling what may have been encouragement. Witnesses suggested the incident was due to the lack of proper marshaling. The PGA of America said: "We will take measures to make sure a situation like this does not happen again." Mickelson didn't comment after his round.
