Persistence pays for Gallacher

Published 06/02/2013 | 04:00

Great to see Scotland's Stephen Gallacher win in Dubai last Sunday after a wait of almost nine years and over 200 tournaments for a victory.

Back in 2005, Gallacher arrived in Ireland for the Irish Open, played at Carton House, which is also this year's venue for the tournament.

He was the reigning Dunhill Links champion and looked forward to adding to his list of titles.

I was drawn in Gallacher's Pro-Am team at Carton House, and he made a great impression. A nice, genuine guy who did all he could to help the amateurs in his team.

Afterwards he made a point of joining us for lunch and we had a great chat about golf, football – he's a Celtic fan – and sport in general.

The nephew of Bernard Gallacher and a cousin of Sky Sports' Kirsty, Stephen is proof that persistence eventually pays off.
