RORY McILROY made teenager Jason Blue see stars when he hit him on the head with his golf ball yesterday.

Then the big-hearted Ulsterman ensured the Bristol youngster would no longer have to sleep under the stars at the British Open this week by booking him into one of Lytham's finest hotels.

McIlroy was concerned when he heard that Blue (16) and a pal had been sleeping in a tent and fending for themselves.

"After what happened, I wanted to ensure Jason would be okay," explained McIlroy, whose wayward drive at Lytham's 15th hole bounced off the back of Blue's head and out of bounds.

"When I turned around and saw Jason lying there, I thought he was dead," said his friend, but Blue was bandaged by medics and seemed delighted to receive the customary signed glove from McIlroy, who is three-under-par after his first-round 67, three off the leader, Australian Adam Scott.

Yet when McIlroy heard the two lads were camping in a nearby field, he immediately set about finding a room for them, saying: "I'd like Jason to have a roof over his head and a comfortable place to stay."
