No late reprieve for Lowry as Clarke shuffles wildcard picks
Darren Clarke is set to confirm a Ryder Cup team with only one Irishman in the side when he names his three wildcard picks today.
The last time Europe took on the USA with just a single player from this island on the team was 1997 - and Clarke was that sole Irishman at Valderrama.
Since then the Irish have managed a minimum of two competitors every time the Ryder Cup was played home and away.
That run is ending. Rory McIlroy is safely in the team, but there will be no late reprieve for either Graeme McDowell or Shane Lowry, who has endured four missed cuts followed by 42nd and 24th place finishes in his last two starts since his runner-up finish at the US Open.
Clarke looks certain to choose Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer, while the power-hitting of Belgian Thomas Pieters may well see him edge out Russell Knox and Luke Donald.
