Mickelson takes a swing at Tour Chief Finchem over tournament congestion
PHIL MICKELSON chose the moment of one of his most satisfying triumphs to take a swipe at PGA Tour chief Tim Finchem and The FedEx Cup, WRITES KARL MacGINTY.
After shooting a 66 to hold off Tiger on the final day at The Deutsche Bank, Mickelson said he's unlikely to defend his 2000 point lead in the FedEx Cup at this week's BMW in Cog Hill.
"I'm a little conflicted on some things because I want to have a balance in my life," explained Mickelson, revealing he's not had more than two days off in a row since July's Open.
A father of three, he wants to spend time with his kids before they begin school next week.
As for Finchem, Mickelson explained: "My frustration from this past year came from asking for a couple of things in the FedEx Cup that weren't done." For that reason, he "wouldn't feel all that bad" about missing BMW.
Mickelson declined to elaborate, though he's been vocal about the Tour trying to cram in too many competitions to make the Cup work. This criticism is compounded by the payment of the $10m first prize being deferred for 20 years.
Woods missed The Barclays; then Ernie Els opted out of Boston and Padraig Harrington has withdrawn from Cog Hill saying he's "shattered".
