McVeigh keen to start season with a bang

TOP ILGU player Danielle McVeigh is all set for a busy start to the domestic campaign.

The winner of the Ladies British and Welsh Open championships last year, McVeigh will mount a strong challenge for the 36-hole Royal County Down Women's Scratch Salver on Sunday.

McVeigh is a member of Royal County Down Ladies and would love to triumph in the Bridgestone-sponsored Scratch Salver, which last year was won by Niamh Kitching of Claremorris.

The Ulster girl, who played on the GB & Ire Vagliano Cup last year, will also challenge for the Women's Munster championships at Ballybunion from March 30-April 2. A change in format for the Senior championship means that the match-play stage is dropped in favour of a 54-hole strokeplay competition.

That will start on Thursday, April 1, with 36 holes for the 51 senior category (plus-nine handicap) players, followed by a cut and 18 holes on Friday April 2. Four days of golf will start on Tuesday with the Junior category (10-18 handicap) 18-hole stroke qualifying round.

Also on the fixture list for the top women golfers is the Ford Ladies Scratch Cup, to be played at Cork golf club on Saturday, April 17.
